Helpful Links
This page contains various links to websites that I have found very helpful.  If you would like to submit any, please e-mail me at administrator<at>pirules.com.  The links are organized in alphabetical order.

Benchmarks

Before purchasing computer parts it is wise to 1) check online reviews and 2) check benchmarks and compare.  One valuable resource I use is Tom's Hardware.  Here are links to common benchmark charts:

  1. CPU Charts - Tom's Hardware
  2.
  3.
Hard Disk Drive Charts - Tom's Hardware
  4.
    Router Charts - SmallNetBuilder
  5.
NAS Charts (Network-Attached Storage) - SmallNetBuilder

Computer Tutorials

There are several excellent sites that contain tutorials and guides on how to do several tasks.  This list isn't nearly exhaustive, but I'll try to some major ones.

Firefox-related Links:

Firefox is a great web browser.  The following links provide valuable information on customizing Firefox and finding Add-ons that increase its usefulness.

Free Online Scans

  1. ActiveScan - Panda Software
  2. BitDefender
  3. Housecall - Trend Micro

Reviews

As I mentioned before, one should check online reviews before purchasing any hardware or even software.  The following list contains sites with hardware and/or software reviews.

Software Download Sites

This list shows several software download sites where you can (legally) download free software and trial versions of non-free software.  If you try free software that you really like, many of the authors are accepting donations, so please support them if you are able to.  Many of the sites have reviews so you can see what other users say about the software.

 Technical Support Forums
You can visit online technical support forums and ask questions, get help, or assist others for free.  I first joined one to ask a question, then started reading responses to learn more.  Before I knew it, I learned enough to start helping others.
  1. Cyber Tech Help - a large support forum with excellent help in nearly every subject (Vista, malware, XP, etc.).
  2.
GeeksToGo - another large support forum with excellent help.  Their malware-removal forum is extremely popular as is their "GeekU" in which members are trained to remove malware using a program called "HijackThis."
  3.
Kicken Hardware - a smaller support forum, but there are many computer experts and it could possibly be the most welcoming forum I have seen.
