What is CHKDSK?

CHKDSK is a utility that allows you to scan your hard drive for errors and bad sectors. It is similar to scandisk in previous versions of Windows.

Why should I run it?

CHKDSK should be run regularly to check for errors, before defragmenting a hard drive, or to help diagnose computer problems.

How can I run it?

You can run CHKDSK through My Computer. You should close all other windows before starting.

1. Open My Computer.

2. Right-click the hard drive you would like to scan and click Properties.


3. Navigate to the Tools tab.


4. Click the Check Now button under Error-checking.


5. Check the first box and the second box if you or someone else suspect bad sectors. Scanning for bad sectors will take a much longer time. Click Start.


6. You should see a dialogue box like this:


7. Click Yes and restart your computer when you are ready.
