What is ntoskrnl.exe?

I get an error message telling me that XP cannot start because ntoskrnl.exe is Missing or Corrupt. How can I fix this?
2. Try to replace the ntoskrnl.exe file with the one on your XP CD. To do this:

expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe, but replace D with your CD drive letter and C:\Windows with the windows installation path you chose when you entered the Recovery Console - Choose to overwrite the file
